Overview

Our curriculum intent is simple; we aim to inspire our learners to become:
  • hungry for knowledge
  • actively curious
  • instilled with a sense of self
In implementing our curriculum, we aspire for all our pupils to gain a profound understanding of their place in the world around them, as demonstrated by the 'Orbits of Learning' below.
Our curriculum planning is based on five key elements of learning, all of which are essential to accelerating pupil progress:

Personal and Academic Progress Plans (PAPPs)
Every child at Kielder Primary School has a Personal and Academic Progress Plan, irrespective of SEND status. These termly plans identify up to three personal targets and outline precisely what each child is expected to achieve in each curriculum area that term.

The objectives are then reviewed as part of the next PAPP cycle. This highly individualised planning means that we can be nimble in adapting to the needs of each and every child in our very unique context as a very small school with mixed-aged classes.

What do our children learn in each subject?

Because our small school has mixed-age classes, we work on a system of cycles in each subject to ensure full curriculum coverage. An overview of all subjects (except English - see the English section for more details) is available below.

Cornerstones
We have adopted Cornerstones for the following subjects:
  • History
  • Geography
  • Science
  • Art & Design
  • Design Technology
Together with Cornerstones consultants, we have designed an exciting and engaging curriculum for our pupils.

We use various methods to assess the impact of our curriculum. This includes:
  • Formal summative assessments (e.g. Phonics Screening Check in Year 1, SATs in KS1 and KS2).
  • Ongoing formative assessment, feeding into termly monitoring of progress by staff and the headteacher.
  • Effective marking and feedback, including coded marking, detailed written feedback where appropriate, as well as verbal feedback.
  • Termly reporting on pupil progress to the Governing Body.
  • Monitoring visits by the governor allocated to curriculum.
