Mental Wellbeing

At Kielder Primary School, we believe that a child’s mental health is as important as their physical health and academic progress. A positive and supportive environment is key to helping every child thrive, not just as a learner but as a confident, happy individual.

Why Mental Health Matters

Children experience a wide range of emotions as they grow, and it’s essential that they feel supported during every stage of their development. When children are emotionally secure and resilient, they are better able to:

• Build strong, positive relationships with others.

• Approach challenges with confidence and determination.

• Express their thoughts and feelings in a healthy way.

• Stay motivated and focused in their learning.

Good mental health lays the foundation for a lifetime of happiness and success, and it enables children to reach their full potential.

What We Do to Support Mental Health

In our school, we create an environment that nurtures emotional well-being by:

• Promoting a culture of kindness and respect: We teach children the importance of empathy, understanding, and looking out for one another.

• Embedding mental health education in the curriculum: Through age-appropriate lessons, we explore topics such as emotions, coping strategies, and mindfulness.

• Providing a safe space to talk: Children are encouraged to share their worries or feelings with trusted adults, whether it’s a teacher, teaching assistant, or peer. Our 'Calm Corner' in our new school library provides a space for quiet reflection and self-regulation.

• Offering activities to build resilience: From mindfulness sessions to creative arts and outdoor learning, we provide opportunities for children to relax, express themselves, and develop coping skills.

• Partnering with parents and carers: We work closely with families to ensure that support continues beyond the school gates.

Mr Ferris is our Senior Mental Health Lead and is a qualified Mental Health First Aider.

This year, we are fortunate enough to have access to MELVA, a creative digital package supporting our KS2 children to talk openly about and better understand their mental health, emotions and wellbeing. It is an impactful investment into mental health education and enhances the THRIVE approach. See the file below for further information.

Our Commitment

Our commitment to nurturing mental health is part of our broader vision to create a happy, inclusive, and supportive school community. By prioritising emotional well-being, we aim to empower every child to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and to flourish in all areas of their development.

If you would like to learn more about our approach to mental health, please feel free to contact us or visit our school. Together, we can support your child in every way possible.

Did You Know... ?
We have dedicated time each day for mindfulness. This special time is used to 'ground' ourselves in the present and ensure that we are calm, focussed and ready to learn.
